The role of an Educational Supervisor (ES) and, more specifically, a Designated Supervisor (DS), is critical in shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals. These roles extend beyond clinical oversight to encompass educational planning, formative assessment, professional advocacy, and ensuring trainee well-being. Effective supervision is a skilled practice that requires specific training in pedagogy, mentoring, feedback, and governance.
This accredited course is designed to equip both new and experienced supervisors with the advanced skills, frameworks, and legal understanding required to excel in these vital roles. Participants will learn to create robust learning environments, conduct fair and effective assessments, navigate trainee difficulty, and fulfill the specific regulatory responsibilities of a Designated Supervisor, ultimately ensuring the highest standards of patient safety and professional development.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Articulate the Roles and Responsibilities: Clearly define the distinct and overlapping duties of an Educational Supervisor (ES) and a Designated Supervisor (DS), including their legal and ethical obligations.
-
Design and Implement Effective Personal Development Plans (PDPs): Create, monitor, and review tailored learning agreements that align with curriculum competencies and a trainee’s individual needs.
-
Master Formative and Summative Assessment: Conduct objective, evidence-based assessments (e.g., Mini-CEX, CBD, MSF) and write high-quality end-of-term/placement reports.
