The ability to deliver difficult news with compassion, clarity, and professionalism is one of the most critical yet challenging skills for any professional, especially in fields like healthcare, law, emergency services, and management. How bad news is communicated can profoundly impact an individual’s ability to cope, their trust in the professional, and their overall experience during a moment of crisis. A poorly delivered message can cause lasting trauma, while a skillfully handled conversation can provide a foundation for resilience and healing.
This course moves beyond theoretical models to provide a deep, practical, and empathetic framework for this essential skill. Participants will learn evidence-based protocols, develop their emotional intelligence, and practice extensively in a safe, supportive environment. The goal is to transform a daunting task into a confident, patient-centered, and humane interaction.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Understand the Profound Impact of Bad News: Articulate the psychological and emotional consequences of poorly and well-delivered bad news on recipients and communicators.
-
Master a Structured Protocol: Confidently apply a proven, step-by-step framework (e.g., SPIKES, ABCDE) to structure a difficult conversation.
-
Employ Advanced Empathic Communication Techniques: Utilize active listening, respond to emotion, and demonstrate genuine empathy through verbal and non-verbal cues.
-
Manage Emotional Responses: Navigate strong emotional reactions from patients, family members, and themselves with professionalism and compassion.
