The Emergency Department (ED) is the frontline of healthcare, a dynamic and high-stakes environment where providers must rapidly assess, diagnose, and manage a vast array of undifferentiated conditions. Speed, accuracy, and effective decision-making under pressure are paramount. This course is designed to sharpen the clinical reasoning and practical management skills of those who work in or are preparing to work in this critical setting.
Through a focused exploration of the most common and critical medical presentations, this program combines essential theoretical knowledge with extensive case-based learning and simulation. Participants will develop a structured, systematic approach to the undifferentiated patient, learn to recognize red flags, and formulate evidence-based management plans for time-sensitive conditions, ultimately improving patient outcomes and ED efficiency.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Apply a Systematic Approach: Utilize a structured ABCDE (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure) framework for the initial assessment and stabilization of any ED patient.
-
Generate and Refine Differential Diagnoses: Develop broad, logical differentials for common complaints and use history, physical exam, and point-of-care testing to narrow them down.
-
Interpret Key Diagnostic Findings: Rapidly interpret ECGs, X-rays, CT scans, and lab results relevant to emergent conditions.
-
Manage Common High-Acuity Presentations: Formulate evidence-based initial management plans for critical conditions like sepsis, ACS, stroke, and trauma.
-
Recognize “Can’t-Miss” Diagnoses: Identify subtle presentations and red flags for life-threatening conditions that must not be overlooked.
-
Enhance Communication and Handover: Effectively communicate assessments and plans within the team and perform structured handovers (e.g., SBAR).
This course is designed for healthcare professionals who are involved in the assessment and management of patients in the emergency setting.
