The cornerstone of all academic advancement and knowledge creation is rigorous, well-designed research. Whether for a thesis, dissertation, journal publication, or a funded grant, the ability to conceptualize, design, and execute a valid research project is a fundamental skill for every scholar and student. This course provides a comprehensive journey through the entire research process, from formulating a compelling research question to presenting defendable findings.
This program moves beyond a simple description of methods to explore the philosophical underpinnings of research (epistemology and ontology) and how they inform methodological choices. Participants will learn to critically evaluate different research designs, apply appropriate data collection and analysis techniques, and understand the ethical imperatives of scholarly inquiry. Through a blend of theoretical frameworks, practical workshops, and peer review, this course equips researchers with the tools to produce work that is methodologically sound, ethically responsible, and academically impactful.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Formulate a clear, focused, and researchable problem statement and set of objectives/hypotheses.
-
Differentiate between major research paradigms (e.g., positivism, interpretivism, pragmatism) and choose an appropriate approach for their research topic.
-
Design a robust research plan, selecting from quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods methodologies.
-
Develop effective data collection instruments (e.g., surveys, interview protocols) and apply sampling strategies.
-
Identify and apply basic techniques for quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
-
Understand the principles of academic integrity, research ethics, and avoidance of plagiarism.
-
Structure and write a research proposal, thesis chapter, or journal article to a high academic standard.
This course is essential for individuals embarking on or currently engaged in academic research:
