Course Outline
In an increasingly interconnected and complex global landscape, international organizations play a pivotal role in addressing transnational challenges that no single nation can solve alone. At the heart of this global governance architecture stands the United Nations (UN) system, a vast network of entities tasked with maintaining international peace and security, promoting sustainable development, protecting human rights, and upholding international law. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the history, structure, functions, and evolving role of the UN and other major international organizations.
Participants will explore the theoretical foundations of multilateralism and the practical realities of international cooperation. The course examines the UN’s principal organs, specialized agencies, funds, and programs, as well as its relationship with regional organizations and non-state actors. Through case studies of current global issues—from conflict resolution and climate change to global health and migration—this program offers a critical understanding of the opportunities and limitations of international diplomacy and institutional action in the 21st century.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Analyze the historical origins and theoretical underpinnings of the modern system of international organizations, with a focus on the United Nations.
-
Map the complex structure of the UN system, including its six principal organs, specialized agencies, funds, and programs.
-
Evaluate the roles and functions of key international organizations in maintaining peace and security, promoting development, protecting human rights, and formulating international law.
-
Assess the interactions between the UN, regional organizations (e.g., AU, EU, ASEAN), and non-state actors (NGOs, civil society, private sector).
-
Critically examine the major challenges facing international organizations, including issues of legitimacy, reform, funding, and power politics.
